In the aftermath of the Bre-X stock debacle and other events, geological practices related to mineral exploration are governed by professional legislation throughout much of Canada. Since 2001, only geologists who are members of the Ordre des géologues can issue an opinion or produce a report on mineral resources in Québec. Geologists must belong to this professional corporation and comply with the legislation governing their profession.
This legal framework has created new constraints that businesses and individuals must take into account when conducting their activities. This presentation will focus on the nature of these constraints and how to adapt to them.
The law requires businesses to hire a licensed professional registered with the Ordre for certain tasks; otherwise they could face criminal penalties impacting on work organization. Licensed professional geologists must comply with various obligations related to protecting the public interest, producing reports and issuing opinions. Exploration practices are evolving accordingly and will continue to do so.

On March 30, 2010, the Québec Government announced a major reform of the mining rights system in Québec, and the reform bill was assented to on June 6, 2011. The Mining Tax Act contains various provisions that allow mine operators to calculate their mining tax or, where applicable, claim a refundable duties credit for losses. The new form to be used by operators as a result of the reform is presented in this session.
Speaker: Julie Gagné, Geological Technician, Direction de l’information géologique du Québec (MRNF)

Québec’s geoscience databank includes over 75,000 documents consisting of more than 2.5 million pages and 300,000 plans that have been compiled over the past 125 years or so. One thousand new reports are added to the databank every year.
This interactive session will show you how to sift through this maze of information and essential data, whose value is estimated at approximately $3.9 billion. You will learn that all documents have been digitized and are available free of charge on the Internet. You will also learn that reported surveys have been georeferenced and that their perimeters can be visualized easily using Google Earth.
