Gravity data available from the Geological Survey of Canada, the Ontario Geological Survey (including the Discover Abitibi data) and the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune du Québec have been integrated into a homogeneous grid that covers the Abitibi greenstone belt from Timmins to Chibougamau. Airborne gravity data from Discover Abitibi were downward-continued to ground level before merging them with the ground gravity data. Station spacing is highly variable and varies from a few hundred metres to over 10 km. The new map is available in digital format, and as a GSC Open File at a scale of 1:750,000. This map leads to a better understanding of the three-dimensional structure of the region and allows deep crustal structures to be mapped.
In addition, a detailed gravity survey at a station spacing of 500 m was done west of the town of Matagami during the fall 2006 and winter 2007. The goal of the survey was to support mineral exploration and help identify favourable structures at depth. Some gravity targets were identified and suggest that the productive Key Tuffite stratigraphic package may be close to surface in areas not previously explored. The Key Tuffite is the main ore horizon in Matagami. |
